Video: building progress

This is the second project of ‚ukuqala’, a students design/build programme at University of Stuttgart, which was initiated by Leslie in 2010. The students designed and built a residental house with two storeys, made of a timber structure and light clay walls. They donated their work for the NGO ‚Village of Hope’, which takes care of children infected and affected by HIV, drugs and alcohol. While working on site, the students also took part in the NGO’s social work e.g. weekly football games, serving donated food to the poorest of the township or teaching life skills to the kids.
In addition to the residental house, a light shade- structure with recycled billboard tarp was built over an existing kindergarden, made of a shipping container, in the township. The temperature inside the kindergarden was radically reduced by this intevention.
